Black Lives Matter Blog #3

Black Lives Matter is a political and social movement that advocates for justice and healing for Black people across the globe. People in support of this movement protest against police brutality and violence that is directed towards people of races other than those who are white. The BLM Movement was founded in 2013 after the murder of Trayvon Martin. This movement recently had large engagement and has been made more aware to the world after the terrible murder of George Floyd that was caused by police brutality.

The movement took a bad turn when protesters became rioters and anarchists. The first amendment protects people’s rights to peaceful protest but does not condone breaking the law by looting store and destroying cities.

The article that I read about the Black Lives Matter Movement talks about how in Portland, Oregon the protests have turned from peaceful to forceful. One of the six freedoms given to Americans is the right to peacefully protest. The “protests” that are taking place in Portland are not peaceful, nor are they really protests, they are riots. The rioters and forcing their way into neighborhoods to harass people who have not shown support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The article mentions a specific incident of the protesters started by peaceful marching and shouting victims’ names to turning the protest into yelling at a Black man, Mr. Moses, who had an American flag in his yard. The protesters quickly turner violent by telling Mr. Moses they were going to burn down his house if he did not remove the flag from his yard.

The article demonstrates how people are taking advantage of this sensitive social movement and turning it into a violent act against innocent civilians. Rioters and looters are trying to force people to take a public side on how they feel about this movement but people do not have to do that. The first amendment gives people the right to say things or to refrain from saying things. What is not protected under this right is any law of applicability. The first amendment does not condone what the rioters are doing in this country.
