In 2002, the first phones with built in cameras became accessible to the general public. These phones were the Nokia 7650 and Sanyo SCP-5300 and they displayed 176X208 pixel color images. This invention was revolutionary because it made it possible for people to take and share photos with anyone, instantly. By 2004, cameras were a regular feature on cell phones and the quality spiked to 1.3 megapixels.

Today the cameras on phones can be used for professional purposes and have almost replaced personal and handheld cameras all together. The iPhone 11 has dual 12-megapixel camera and is stocked with many features to make the photos taken by the camera on the phone look professional.

Philippe Kahn invented the first camera phone because he wanted to share his daughter’s birth with lots of people instantly. Kahn connected his flip-phone, camera, and laptop all together to generate the first photo taken on a phone.

This is the first photo that was taken by a camera phone.

Having a camera in our phones changed the way we live. We can capture any moment by pulling out our phone and snapping a photo. Since 2002, the quality of cameras has greatly increased. I think this invention is so important to today’s generation because we live on social media.  With the growth of influencer culture, cameras are essential. Being an influencer is one of the most popular occupations for people my age. It used to be harder to be an influencer because they needed expensive camera equipment to make their content look professional. With the advanced cameras that are now in all modern cell phones, it is possible for all people to create professional content.

 

Social media is such a big part of our culture because people love to post and share with others what they are doing all the time. Without the invention of the camera phone, all of the social media platforms we have would be somewhat redundant. Most social media platforms require pictures or videos.

Before researching this, I never realized how important the camera on my phone is. Now I am so aware of often I use my camera and am also so grateful to have the ability to capture all of life’s moments. Without Philippe Kahn creating this to share his daughter's birth, we might not have the same quality cameras in our phones that we have today.
