EOTO Total Information Awareness Blog #10

Image
Total Information Awareness was a mass detection program founded by the United States Information Awareness Office. It was known by this name from February through May of 2003, until being changed to the name Terrorism Information Awareness. The name Total Information Awareness worried a lot of people because this program was the biggest surveillance program in the history of the United States. It was intended to identify potential terrorist threats to our country while they were conspiring and hopefully prevent future attacks.  Congress defunded the Total Information Awareness office in late 2003. Many media outlets reported that the program was being used to gather non-terrorist information on all citizens in the United States.  The negative repercussions of access to our citizens information is detrimental to our established freedoms https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Information_Awareness#Components The graphic above gives a detailed explanation of the software used for Total Info

Privacy Online Blog #9

What private information do you give to your phone and computer? I have given my G-Mail, my address, my credit card information, my thumb print, and so many other personal things that I should reserve for only myself. Yet, I gave away so much personal information without any thought. Not only do I give up this information to just my personal electronic devices, but also to many websites and social media platforms. I have never given much thought to privacy online because all of my accounts are private and I keep my location services off. The more I have researched, I learned that none of that matters. All of my information can be found on the internet with in a few seconds. There are programs with facial recognition that can quickly identify me and link me to other personal things about.  I do not like the idea that Apple and Google have every detail for my life for at least the past decade documented and saved somewhere. My life has never had any privacy, even when I thought I did. My

Diffusion of Innovation with Uber Blog #8

In 1962, E.M. Rogers came up with the Diffusion of Innovation theory. It is one of the oldest communication theories and it explains how an idea or product and is adopted by a mass population or social group over time. The bell curve chart shows how these ideas or products quickly gain acceptance by the majority, but how it also takes a while longer for the late majority and laggards to pick up on this innovation. There will never be 100% adoption on any idea or product. Only 85% of the specific population or social group will adopt the innovation. In this blog post I am going to break down Uber's Diffusion of Innovation. " Uber  is a platform where those who drive and deliver can connect with riders, eaters, and restaurants."  https://help.uber.com/riders/article/how-does-uber-work?nodeId=738d1ff7-5fe0-4383-b34c-4a2480efd71e https://bbinn3.wixsite.com/ubercatalyst/diffusion-of-innovation The first section on the chart are the pioneers or innovators. They are the ones com

During the EOTO Tech Timeline presentations, I learned so much about the inventions of technologies that I use everyday. One thing that all of the presentations had in common that really stood out to me was that the people presenting always got excited to share the “fun fact” that they learned during their research. Even I shared a fun fact about my technology. The presentation on YouTube had many fun facts and statistics that really caught my attention. I watch many different things on YouTube all the time. It serves several purposes in my life. For example, I use it educationally to help me understand concepts, I use it to get news, and mostly for entertainment. There were many things in that presentation that I never knew about YouTube and I found impressive. One of them being that 500 hours of content is uploaded per minute. Another fact that I learned was that it costs $6.85 billion to run YouTube annually.  When I reflect on this presentation, I keep thinking about how YouTube ha

EOTO The Camera Phone Blog #6

In 2002, the first phones with built in cameras became accessible to the general public. These phones were the Nokia 7650 and Sanyo SCP-5300 and they displayed 176X208 pixel color images. This invention was revolutionary because it made it possible for people to take and share photos with anyone, instantly. By 2004, cameras were a regular feature on cell phones and the quality spiked to 1.3 megapixels. https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/5-major-moments-in-cellphone-history-1.1407352#:~:text=In%202002%2C%20the%20first%20phones,media%20release%20at%20the%20time . Today the cameras on phones can be used for professional purposes and have almost replaced personal and handheld cameras all together. The iPhone 11 has dual 12-megapixel camera and is stocked with many features to make the photos taken by the camera on the phone look professional. Philippe Kahn invented the first camera phone because he wanted to share his daughter’s birth with lots of people instantly. Kahn connected his flip-

Eight Values of Free Expression Blog #5

Image
There are eight values of free expression. The first one is marketplace of ideas which is about truth and letting ideas be publicized. The next one is participation in self-government, this expresses the importance of informed electorates in debates. The third value is stable change, the idea that people will be more stable if they are allowed to freely say what they please or vent about things they are unhappy about. Individual self-fulfillment is next, allowing people to become themselves through speech and expression. After that is check on government power. This is so important to our country because it allows we the people to perform vertical checks and balances to restrict the government’s power and their abuse of it. The sixth value of free expression is to promote tolerance. This allows people to say bad things or hate speech to help teach society what is inappropriate behavior when it comes to speech and expression. The next value is to promote innovation. This helps promote i

Anti War Voices Blog #4

The United States government has always joined and/ or started wars without the support of the American citizens. It is proven throughout history that war destroys the economies of all parties involved. The government tries to shut down people who speak out against them going to war or even anything war related. People never really hear anything on the news or in major publications about war or war related topics. People have to search on cryptic or somewhat hidden websites to find strong anti-war opinions. Even when trying to just search about war on Google, it is very difficult to find anything about modern war and the United States involvement in it. The government knows that the majority of citizens are not in favor of the U.S. getting involved in wars. https://www.theamericanconservative.com/web-categories/realism-restraint/   https://www.antiwar.com/ These two websites showcase very strong anti-war voices from all sides of the political spectrum. Often people think that conservat
