During the EOTO Tech Timeline presentations, I learned so much about the inventions of technologies that I use everyday. One thing that all of the presentations had in common that really stood out to me was that the people presenting always got excited to share the “fun fact” that they learned during their research. Even I shared a fun fact about my technology. The presentation on YouTube had many fun facts and statistics that really caught my attention. I watch many different things on YouTube all the time. It serves several purposes in my life. For example, I use it educationally to help me understand concepts, I use it to get news, and mostly for entertainment. There were many things in that presentation that I never knew about YouTube and I found impressive. One of them being that 500 hours of content is uploaded per minute. In 2002, the first phones with built in cameras became accessible to the general public. These phones were the Nokia 7650 and Sanyo SCP-5300 and they displayed 176X208 pixel color images. This invention was revolutionary because it made it possible for people to take and share photos with anyone, instantly. There are eight values of free expression. The first one is marketplace of ideas which is about truth and letting ideas be publicized. The next one is participation in self-government, this expresses the importance of informed electorates in debates. The third value is stable change, the idea that people will be more stable if they are allowed to freely say what they please or vent about things they are unhappy about. Individual self-fulfillment is next, allowing people to become themselves through speech and expression. After that is check on government power. This is so important to our country because it allows we the people to perform vertical checks and balances to restrict the government’s power and their abuse of it. The United States government has always joined and/ or started wars without the support of the American citizens. It is proven throughout history that war destroys the economies of all parties involved. The government tries to shut down people who speak out against them going to war or even anything war related. People never really hear anything on the news or in major publications about war or war related topics. People have to search on cryptic or somewhat hidden websites to find strong anti-war opinions. Even when trying to just search about war on Google, it is very difficult to find anything about modern war and the United States involvement in it. Black Lives Matter is a political and social movement that advocates for justice and healing for Black people across the globe. People in support of this movement protest against police brutality and violence that is directed towards people of races other than those who are white. The BLM Movement was founded in 2013 after the murder of Trayvon Martin. In the United States, there are three main branches of government; the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. The judicial branch is the court system in the United States. We the people trust these courts, of all different levels, to interpret the constitution. The highest-level court in the United States is the supreme court. It is the most powerful judiciary system in the world and is used as a model for judiciary systems around the world. The supreme court is made up of 9 justices who are appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. The justices have no term limit and usually serve as a judge until they are no longer able. After watching the videos about the supreme court, I have a new-found respect and admiration for the 9 justices. On snapchat, a person can subscribe to all types of news sources like; The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, ESPN’s SportsCenter, etc. The specific media sources that I subscribe to are tailored to the type of news I care more about, i.e. celebrity drama. My subscriptions include E! News’ the Rundown, People magazine, and Seventeen magazine. These media sources provide short and visually pleasing stories that are easy and entertaining to read. I also enjoy the convenience of having quick news stories on the same page as my friends’ content, it makes news more easily accessible.
